Charlie MacPherson has been bringing his Photography Group (The Amazing Image) to Windward House for 3 years now. We are delighted to have them. I always enjoy looking at their nature photographs during breakfast. We see the wildlife on our hikes and kayaks and sails, but there is something very special about the moments frozen in time, the intimate nearness of these beautiful wild animals that Charlie is able to achieve with his camera. There’s nothing like seeing the “racing stripes” on the side of an osprey’s head, the texture of its feathers the gleam in its eye as it carries a fish away from the harbor. Charlie was inspired by Wild Kingdom as a kid, and I felt like a kid looking at the shots he and the other photographers on his tour took – that rush of excitement you get when you see a wild animal up close in its natural habitat. You can see this influence in his many wonderful nature pictures. Maine with its abundance of wildlife and beauty is a natural destination for wildlife photographers.
Here in Camden Maine, it is common to see painters and photographers walking around the harbor and the hills looking for their next portrait subject. Charlie has a gift and the knowledge to take his photographers who take his tours to locations that are perfect to catch on film that natural moment that otherwise would go unnoticed. If you’ve ever tried to take a picture of a nature wildlife subject you know what a challenge that is. I’m always astounded at the descriptions the photographers on his tours give, about how they could not have gotten the shots they got without Charlie.
It is such a pleasure for me to see Charlie’s and his photographers who take his tours pictures in the morning. You can see the delight on the photographers who take his tours faces as they show you what natural moment they caught on film. I can still see in my mind’s eye the picture of an osprey catching a fish and flying away with it. The eyes of the osprey are so clear and fish is shimmering.
