Very Vegan Valentine Package

Since our operation here at the Bed and Breakfast is a small one, I get to see every aspect of the business. My favorite is the evolution of our breakfast menu. When we bought the Bed and Breakfast business in Camden Maine 8 years ago, the innkeepers were serving a lot of pre-packaged food. We did the “pre-package” style of breakfast for about 6 months, because we knew no other way. The breakfast at the inn is a menu selection and not common to the traditional Bed and Breakfast. Every guest chooses from a breakfast menu and every item is made to order. We decided to change the items on the menu to include organic and home-made recipes. The first couple of years we saw alot of gluten-free requests and we now have several gluten-free options. One guest was so happy to see gluten-free pancakes on out menu, she said she hadn’t had pancakes for 5 years. She was here 9 days and had them every morning. Then we saw vegetarian requests. We figured out how to do most of our offerings vegetarian and many vegetarians guests are pleased. Only within the last 2 tears have had vegan requests. We now have a very nice selection of vegan recipes on our breakfast menu. One vegan guest almost missed breakfast, thinking we had nothing for him. I showed him the menu with the little (v) next to items that we can make as a vegan breakfast and he quickly decided to be late for his PopTech Conference and stay for breakfast. He said we had done something that he was very impressed with, we have created the trifecta of vegan breakfasts, vegan french toast, vegan pancakes and vegan waffles. We even have a nice vegan sticky rice and warm coconut milk option. Of course all of our selections are wonderful with our organic coffee or our specialty Windward House Raw Green Smoothie.

We decided to put the little marks of (v) for vegan and (g) for gluten-free on our menu so that guests can just ask for what they want and not have to go into a discussion of their dietary needs. Everyone in the breakfast room does not need to know that you have Celiac’s. I believe that making options available for everyone is important. It shows that we respect for you and wish to see that you have every opportunity to eat whenever you want. Vegan diet is a challenge, but here at Windward House, it is simple. Come to breakfast, forget your granola bars in the room and sit with everyone and eat.

“Comfortable B&B with an outstanding breakfast and gracious hosts. My wife is vegan and Jesse had no problem accommodating her needs during breakfast. Windward house is ideally located close to downtown Camden and adjacent to Camden Hills State Park which offers many great hiking trails.” – LINY Traveler, Trip Advisor

“The breakfast menu is amazing – many, many choices that use local foods and offer gf choices. The hosts are welcoming and low-key. They are also responsive and available as needed.” Suzbird – Trip Advisor

“We had sautéed bananas on french toast one morning and the other blueberry pancakes. I love the idea of having options for breakfast. Sometimes you just don’t want the default item the B&B is serving. ” Ben P, Trip Advisor

“The breakfasts were delicious and plentiful – any special requests were no problem.” Dawniepaul – Trip Advisor
