Maritime Fall Foliage

July 25, 2010 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: KRISTEN BIFULCO, 207-236-9656, bnb at windwardhouse dot com

COLORS OF CAMDEN MAINE
Maritime Fall Foliage & Event Calendar make Camden Maine a unique New England Fall Vacation.

The fantastic spectacle that is the maritime fall foliage, the lush mountains and calm ocean set Maine fall foliage apart from other New England foliage experiences. Camden Maine Innkeeper, Kristen Bifulco, stated “guests call us in January and ask when the leaves are going to change, visitors look forward to Camden’s Fall foliage all year round.”
The Colors of Camden, like an antique New England quilt formed by the meeting of Camden Harbor, Beauchamp Point, Penobscot Bay and the Camden Hills whether viewed from the air, aboard a scenic helicopter tour, the peak of Mt. Battie, Maiden’s cliff, aboard a Historic Schooner, or the lawn of the Camden Public Library, are breathtaking. Each aspect of land, mountain, sea and sky form a unique patch in this harmonious whole of the natural beauty of Autumn: deep ocean blue and light sky blue mingle with wispy white clouds, and the deep reds of sugar Maples veined with the vibrant gold and yellow of beeches, birches, elms, and green and black ash, and the rust and amber of oaks. The backdrop of Windjammer sails and American Bald Eagles in addition to leaves and trees, make Camden Maine a unique Fall experience.

In addition to the inherently economical fun of leaf peeping, Camden has lots of local events that are worth taking that scenic Rt1 trip up the coast to enjoy. Fall events are for the sophisticated movie buffs, boat lovers, cutting edge leaders and wine aficionados.
For those that want to see Camden fall foliage from the sky, Spirit Soaring Glider Rides http://www.spiritsoaring.org/   is a great choice.
To see the foliage from the sea: Schooner Olad, Schooner Surprise and Schooner Heron offer great harbor views.

4th of July Inn History 1854

July 1, 2010 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

The Camden Yacht Club Dingy Parade is today Friday July 2nd, 2010 at 10:00am. The community children go out on boats in the harbor all decorated for the fourth. My daughter, Hope, is dressed like George Washington. She is wearing a pair of my nice black leather boats! If she ruins them I will scream, anyway what we do for our children and our country! God Bless America!

This is my post from last year 2009: I will write about the wonderful Camden Yacht Club dingy parade and add some pictures, but first i want to share some fourth of July history that I learned this evening. I was googling about Elijah Glover, the ship builder that built this Inn and I found out that he was not only a ship builder but a sea captain. More interesting than that, there is documentation that there was a family wedding here on the 4th of July 1854, the same year he finished building the house. I find great joy in this news, because it further proves to me that this house was always great for hosting groups of people and sharing wonderful moments.

The children dressed in red, white and blue and set out on their dingys, turn abouts and optys. They waved their flags, blew their wistles and yelled happy 4th of July. All of this took place in Camden Harbour. The rain stopped for their wonderul parade. It probally is the cutest thing you can witness.

Aldermere Farm Visitor’s Center Open for Season; Farm Tours Offered Fridays

Summer is here, and the black-and-white Belted Galloways are grazing the pastures at Aldermere Farm in Rockport.  For those passersby who would like to learn about the Farm, the Aldermere visitor’s center at 20 Russell Avenue will be open during the summer months.

The visitor’s center is staffed by knowledgeable and friendly volunteers who can answer questions about the Farm, and orient visitors to its trails and cattle viewing sites.  There are also “Beltie” retail items for sale.  Sales of these items support Aldermere Farm and its mission to protect a working landscape in Rockport and conduct farm-based educational programming.

Because it is volunteer-staffed, open hours may vary at the visitor’s center.  Currently, it is open Mondays from 2-4, Tuesdays from 2-4 starting July 12th, Wednesdays from 10-4, Thursdays from 10-5, Fridays from 10-2, and Saturdays from 10-2.  If you are traveling a long distance, please call the Aldermere office at 236-2739 to confirm the center will be open.

For those that would like an even more in-depth experience at Aldermere Farm, there will be guided farm tours happening every Friday starting at 10 AM.  These tours will meet at the visitor’s center.

Aldermere Farm is a program of Maine Coast Heritage Trust, a statewide land trust.

Va-Bloom! – Gardens, Gardens, Gardens

June 19, 2010 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

VABLOOM: A vacation where one visits gardens and blooming flowers. A new word created by the children at Windward House. Steve Colbert of Comedy Central would be so proud. He recently ranted about the NY Times banning the word Tweet because it was not a real word. Steve Colbert is famous for making new words up, such as truthiness. Now for my blog entry…. A guest called yesterday to reserve for July 14, 15, and 16th at our Camden Maine Bed and Breakfast. He specifically was coming to Camden Maine for the Camden Garden Club Tour http://www.camdengardenclub.com/index.html . The Camden Windward House is a “Friend” Sponsor of this event. The gentleman stated that after coming to the Camden garden tour he was headed to Kennebunk for the Private Gardens of Kennebunk Tour. He enjoys gardening and said that going on these trips were cheaper than therapy. The Kennenbunk Tour is on July 17th. http://www.kidsfreetogrow.org/Events_Calendar.htm. I thought this was such a great itinerary that I wanted to share it with anyone that is reading this Windward Blog.  I suggested to the man that he should add  a quick visit to the  Coastal  Maine Botanical Gardens: http://www.mainegardens.org/

I made dinner reservation for this lovely couple at Atlantica Seafood Bistro and Francines.

A wonderful example of a small family owned hand made product in Maine using organic and biodynamic methods to produce their wines. Brian and Allie Smith purchased the 57 acre farm in Warren Maine in 2007, and have planted three and half acres of vines. Try the “Villager” White.
Oyster River Wine Growers just opened a tasting room/ farm market on Rt 1 in Thomaston Maine in a little pink building on the corner of rt 131.

DISCOVER ROCKPORT MAINE

June 3, 2010 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

Rockport which was once the same town as Camden has a beautiful harbor, a wonderful scenic byway along Beauchamp Point and is a hidden gem that is starting to come alive again in it’s little harbor village downtown.

Rockport Maine, named for the quarries that once supplied lime for kilns that manufactured the lime used in the White House, and in all the tall buildings in the major cities on the eastern seaboard is now home to one of the most famous wooden boat building and restoring shipyards, Rockport Marine (http://www.rockportmarine.com/). Wooden boats come from around the world to be rebuilt here in Rockport Maine.

The Rockport Opera house hosts world class concerts, and is right near a newly restored building that has a great new restaurant overlooking the harbor – Shepherd’s Pie from the creative culinary talent of Camden’s Francine’s Bistro, Brian Hill. No website up yet, but check back because we will certainly lead you to it!

The schooner yacht Heron gives wonderful sunset cruises with hors d’oeurves, BYO beer/wine, out of Rockport harbor,  after your cruise you can enjoy a fantastic dinner at  Shepherd’s Pie (reservations highly recommended).

Rockport village is also home to the Center for Maine Contemporary Art: CMCA. The CMCA hosts very prominent Maine artists and has a famous craft show in the summer. http://www.artsmaine.org/

Schooner yacht Heron  http://www.woodenboatco.com/ :  Bonnie and her wonderful family host a unique sailing trip in Maine. The Heron Schooner trips are a little longer then the Camden Harbor Schooner boat trips. The Heron hosts a wonderful Island Sail with Lunch, Indian Island Light/Eco Tours and a Gourmet Sunset Sail. This is the only day sailer that you can eat a meal on. It is a very relaxing and scenic harbor. The Schooner Heron was used in Johnny Depp’s film “The Rum Diary”.
Itinerary:

Go to CMCA for the art experience,

Go out on a sail on the Schooner Heron,

Dinner at Shepherd’s Pie (link coming!)

Consignments in Camden

May 23, 2010 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

My eyes opened widely when my guest asked about consignment shops in the area. No one has ever asked me about these. Antiques are very popular in this area but I have never fielded a question about recyled clothing. I was reluctant at first to go to the  area consignment shops  but I am so happy that I discovered these great places that recycle mostly designer clothes. Most consignment shops have very strict limits on clothing, has to be clean, not out dated, big brands are preferred.

Recently I went to a clothing swap with some friends. Everyone brings there clothes, that they never wear but think are too god to put in the goodwill bin. If you have never had a clothing swap, I highly recommend it. Bunch of women, trying on each other’s clothes, wine and snacks, a wonderful evening.

This weekend we hosted 4 lovely women from Texas. They were here to have fun and shop. I first directed them to the wonderful boutique shops in out downtown, but then also guided them to the consignment shops for more hidden treasures.

Here is a great list of consignment shops in the Camden Area. Items change everyday and it is a fun rainy day activity.  If you are at home, you might enjoy: http://www.clothingswap.com/ whose moto is Be Good, Be Green, Be Glam! If you have really great clothing to swap you might want to try : http://refashioner.com/ .

Maine Consignment shops:

Camden Merchant’s Co-op: Mechanic Street – Downtown Camden (good antique furniture)

Cottage Consignment http://cottageconsignment.com/

Frugal Suzies: 44 Elm Street Camden Maine

Heavenly Threads Thrift Shop: 55 Elm Street, next to the Congregational Church. http://www.camdenucc.org/heavenly%20threads%20+%20SOS.html

Waste – Not Baskets

May 13, 2010 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

This is a picture of our new Waste-Not Recycle Baskets that we have in all our guest rooms at Windward House. At first, I was a little nervous about putting this odd looking container in my beautiful rooms. It is broken into 4 compartments, 1 for glass, 1 for paper, 1 for plastic, 1 for cans. So far the guests have not mentioned it, but they definitely are using them. We had a generic looking basket with the word recycle on it, but guests did not seem to use it. With the words right on it, people are making a connection and recycling everything. I did not expect so much to be recycled from the guests. It just proves, if you make it obvious and easy, people will do the right thing for the environment.

Today I went to our local recycling center, a.k.a., the dump, they have bins that you have to sort your garbage. I was so excited because this year we were actually able to recycle all the plastic flower pots. We buy alot of flowers for the garden but in the past just threw the plastic containers in the garbage because our recycle center only took #2 plastics, but now they take plastics 1,2,3,4,5,6, & 7. It felt great to recycle those pots. If you interested in the waste not basket here is the link: www.waste-not-basket.com

Windward Coffee Mug

May 1, 2010 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

Windward House Mugs, a One of a Kind Original Creation

We have Peter Jones of Mountain Street Pottery to thank for this really great hand made mug.
This mug is a tradition at the Camden Windward House Bed and Breakfast. This Earthen ware Pottery Mug  is an excellent choice for coffee. Guests love the little finger dent in the handle that makes the mug so comfortable to hold. The mugs were designed and made by Mountain Street Pottery for Windward House. When Kris and Jes bought the Inn the mugs came with the deal. The original mugs were used for morning breakfast and so many people offered to buy the mug right from the table that Kristi and Jesse contacted Mountain Street Pottery and asked him to make more, this time to sell. There are still some original mugs in rotation at breakfast, so if you see on, take it for a ride, have a cup of coffee in it, than take one home with you. Price $22.99

Relaxing in Camden Maine

April 29, 2010 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

A lovely entry in one of our guest journals..

When I came to Camden, I was quite burned out. I’d been working very long hours the entire year and knew that on my return I would be working very long hours again, in addition also traveling for work every week for the next year. I wanted desperately to relax and unwind. I love the water and my dad had mentioned windjammers. I fell in love with the idea immediately. I found the Mary Day Schooner online and planned my trip around their 3 day first cruise of the season. I planned to visit St. Louis first and then stay in Camden. Little did I realize how much an impact my stay in your carriage house would affect me. I suspect it will be as profound an impact as the long awaited cruise will have. The room is so lovely, and inviting. Just stepping through the door lifted a huge weight from my shoulders. The hot soak in your beautiful tub and sinking deep into sleep on that fabulous bed did the rest. It truly was a magical time for me. I enjoyed talking to your Australian yachting guest in the morning. I adored your perfect (and beautiful) blueberry pancakes (the blueberries here really do taste better) and the bottomless cup of coffee.I hope to come back many times. You’ve really made a wonderful place here, in a wonderful town. Thanks for everything. Best wishes to you and your family….

Why are there so many guests here this weekend?

April 19, 2010 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

This weekend was very odd, strange weather and a lot of guests (it is only April!). Friday started out nice and sunny, Saturday the rain came and then it snowed, Sunday it rained. Camden is a great sea coast town and is very pleasant when the sun is out. You can hike, walk around,  or just sit by the water. When the weather is odd, it is nice to have a beautiful Inn room to sit by the fire and read a book. If it is nice out, we definitely have more interest in overnight guests, business picks up. When it is going to rain business is very slow. That’s why when we had a lot of guests this weekend, I was very confused. The weather was not great but the phone would not stop ringing. This weekend we had so many that I questioned a guest and said, “Why are you here?”  He said it is Patriot’s Day. Having grown up in New York, I had not been familiar with Patriot’s Day.  Patriot’s Day is not on my radar as a travel weekend. Some businesses actually give a paid holiday.  It is acknowledged in Massachusets, Maine and Wisconsin. For more info on Patriot’s Day : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriots’_Day . Guests were all different this weekend. The range ran from Minnesota Dairy Farmers to Tax Lawyers from Massachusetts. We even had a lovely newly wed couple celebrating their honeymoon. (That is the fourth honeymooning couple we have had  for so far this year).

Moon Suppers & Sunday Suppers of Maine

April 19, 2010 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

Just North of Camden , in Lincolnville, a new farm has established itself as a new culinary destination. You can make a reservation to go be apart of a group dinner  once a month. Moon Suppers: occurs on a Monday, which translates in Old English to Moon Day. The cook takes advantage of the seasonal and local ingrediants. The evening begins with an amuse bouche, followed by four courses. Each Moon Supper is $50 per person, with a recommended tip of $10 for the server. The farm does not have a liquor license and you can bring your own drink. There are only 20 seats available, so please make a reservation well ahead of time to reserve a place. The Camden Windward House is only 15 minutes from the farm and can arrange a dinner for you. I recommend this for guests that have been here before and have already enjoyed all the local restaurants. This is a new and fun idea. The supper is at Salt Water Farm – Lincolnville

My friend in Connecticut (Anna) saw that I was interested in healthy food at schools. I sent an invite a couple of days ago on my facebook page to all my friends to join the Jami Oliver Food Revolution. Anna directed me to this other great website that helps you write a letter to your local legislatures. I sent the following letter to Rep. Chellie Pingree, Sen Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine.  I sent a letter to these reps about a month ago for Earth hour. Earth Hour is another great initiative to save energy! The Internet is making it easier to get on board with these great ideas.  For more info on the healthy food campaign go to: http://www.slowfoodusa.org/index.php/campaign/time_for_lunch/ Thanks Anna!

Dear Rep Chellie Pingree, Sen Olympia Snowe, Sen Susan Collins,

I’m concerned about child obesity. Right now, nearly one third of American children are overweight or obese. That’s a major threat to their health and to the future security and economic prosperity of our country.

It’s time to act, starting with the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act. As a voter in your district, I urge you to invest at least $1 billion per year, to strengthen nutrition standards and to link schools to local farms.

Right now, schools receive $2.68 for each lunch served  – only about $1 of which goes towards food. As a result, most schools have to rely on the cheap processed foods that are fueling the obesity and diabetes epidemics.

To help America’s children get back on the track towards good health, the Child Nutrition Act must include:

1. A full investment of at least $1 billion per year, as proposed by the Administration. School meal providers say a truly healthy meal costs $1 more, which is the goal we need to work towards. Investing in healthy food now will save hundreds of billions in health care costs down the line.

2.  Stronger nutrition standards for all the food sold at school, including the food sold in school vending machines.

3.  $10 million per year in mandatory funding for Farm to School programs, which create local jobs and help schools teach healthy eating.

When you reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act, please keep America’s kids in mind and put their needs first. Thank you for your support.

Camden Deli

April 1, 2010 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

37 Main Street Camden

207-236-8343

For the best lobster roll in Camden, go to the Camden Deli. They have home baked deserts, great deli sandwiches, and home made soups and chowder, all served in a comfortable atmosphere with a great view of the harbor. They have lounge seating upstairs and serve cold draft beer. Upstairs is also a great outside deck where you can sit and enjoy a panoramic view of Camden Harbor. The Camden Deli is a local favorite. The views from down stairs and upstairs are wonderful in any season. The deli uses Boars Head meats in its sandwiches, many of which are named for local attractions. If you plan on a picnic, stop by the Camden Deli first, you won’t be disappointed. Great to take a sandwich out with you on a boat or on a hike. The Camden Windward House now offers room service with the Camden Deli. Call from the house phone to have a meal delivered to your room. http://www.camdendeli.com/

Bed and Breakfast Magic

March 30, 2010 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

You don’t get this type of magic in a hotel or motel (written by young lovers at Windward House)(2007)

Oh Sofia, This room was a great idea. I thought we were going to have to sleep on your sister’s floor. With the dog to boot. I mean I like the dog but this is so much better than sleeping with the dog.  And the bath…. OMG how nice was that?  Maybe a 25% larger tub would make it more fun for two of us. I have to say you do look good in the tub….

Oh Rick, When Mamma said she would treat us to a room,(my mamma, not yours or ours, that would be weird!) I had no idea there would be a canopy. I luuuvvvv canopies. I even love to say the word can oh pea! It just feels good on the tip of my tongue. Mmmm! Thank you for un-tucking the bed linen for me. I like to feel free even my feet like to feel free and they are warm and toasty and happy!!

More and more travelers, couples, individual women and men, retirees, families are looking for vacations where they can do more than ride the rides, they want an experience that expands them as persons. For these people a personal challenge in the form of acquiring a new skill, developing an innate talent, overcoming a fear, or just learning a little about a wonderful place or an artistic tradition enhances the other vacation activities of doing nothing, eating good food, and laughing with friends and family. We call this personal growth travel, and the Camden Maine area is the perfect personal growth travel destination. From furniture craftsmanship, to crewing on a schooner, from a photographic or film making workshop to touring a local cheese factory, farms, crafts, pottery, jewelry making, ship building, wooden boat building, wine making, liquor making, honey making, traditional craft making, rock climbing, hiking, sailing, camping, fishing, yoga, meditation, all of these activities which qualify as personal growth activities are right here. Camden is not just a really great little New England fishing village, it is a place full of learning opportunities. So not only do we have world class gourmet cuisine from local farms and fresh seafood, galleries, museums, world class music festivals, arts and entertainment, but an environment is the perfect destination for travelers who wish to use their time away to learn, achieve, develop the self, enjoy nature, escape from the pressures of ordinary life, indulge in a little physical activity, build a relationship, where you can come and stay, and leave a bigger person….. That’s what being a personal growth travel destination is all about, that’s what Camden is all about.

Culinary Tourism

March 25, 2010 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

Culinary tourism is defined as experiential travel, including local, domestic, and international tours, whereby one learns about and/or consumes food and drink reflecting a region’s cuisine and/or culture. Camden Maine is a New England Epicenter for Culinary tourism. The food and drink of the coast of Maine are superb and should be experienced by all. I have children and recently we went to NY for the traditional Italian family Christmas Eve fish dinner. My 10 year old son commented that the lobster in NY was not as good as the lobster in Maine. Most people at the party agreed. It was then that I realized the asset I have in my Maine neighborhood. The wonderful bounty of the sea: Frutta di Mar. The flavors of the coast are like no other.  Potatoes, vodka, fiddleheads, blueberries all worth trying when in Camden Maine.

I hestitate to share this wonderful website I recently came upon (don’t want everyone to know my great find). For those that want truely Maine Made protects, should check out http://www.transfigurationhermitage.org/. These nuns can make some awesome cookies and jams. They also make a great lasagna, but you can’t buy that online.

Camden Inn & Cruise Packages

March 12, 2010 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

Windward House is a Premier Inn and is honoring this package:

Land Ho: Windjammer Guests Make Landfall in Camden, Maine

Camden, MAINE – With half of the Maine Windjammer Association’s fleet of historic sailing vessels based in Camden Harbor, it’s no surprise they’ve partnered with Camden’s Premier Inns to offer a special sailing package that includes a cruise with extra time ashore to enjoy this sea- and mountain-side community.

The Camden Inn & Cruise Package offers a windjammer cruise along with two nights of hospitality at one of 11 inns just a stone’s throw from the windjammer docks.  Passes to the Camden Hills State Park are also included, or guests can opt to take a docent-guided tour of the 300-acre Beech Hill Preserve in nearby Rockport. Miles of well-groomed trails offer excellent hiking as well as spectacular views of Camden Harbor, Penobscot Bay and the islands beyond. One day, the innkeepers will provide a “Specialty of Maine” gourmet picnic lunch featuring lobster rolls and lots of local goodies.

Visitors can schedule their Camden shore leave either before or after their cruise. The 12 vessels in the windjammer fleet offer three- to six-day cruises from May to October. Guests are invited to participate in all shipboard activities, from taking a turn at the wheel to raising and lowering sails.  All of the windjammers have a well-earned reputation for outstanding sailing adventures and delicious down-home cooking.  One night everyone goes ashore for a traditional island lobster bake.

The town of Camden has been nicknamed “the Jewel” of the Maine coast, and is truly a picture-perfect seaside community.  “Where the mountains meet the sea,” visitors encounter nostalgic charm surrounding the many fine restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques.   Historic architecture is prevalent in the dozens of 19th-century homes;  the widow’s walks perched atop them are reminiscent of a time when the wives of sea captains paced within, awaiting the first glimpse of home-bound sails on the horizon.  A short distance from the center of the village is the entrance to Camden Hills State Park, with over 30 miles of hiking trails.  Mt. Battie is one of the mountains that slopes gently from the water’s edge; it offers an auto-road to its peak for beautiful panoramic views of Penobscot Bay and rolling hills to the north and west.

In addition to the all-inclusive windjammer cruise, this package offers excellent value and the following features:

•  Two consecutive nights accommodations in a queen room with private bath at one of Camden’s Premier Inns.

 •  Full breakfast each day and full use of Inn amenities.

 •  Two-day pass to Camden Hills State Park or guided hike up Beech Hill.

•  Gourmet picnic lunch with lobster rolls and other local goodies.

Camden Inn & Cruise Packages  start at $599 per person, based on double occupancy, for a five-night vacation.  Solo traveler rates are available. Upgraded rooms and extended cruise or inn stays are also available at an additional charge, subject to availability.

For more information about the Camden Inn & Cruise Package, contact the Innkeeper at Camden Windward House Bed and Breakfast 207-236-9656.

Spirit Soaring Glider Rides: What Could Be More Adventurous Than flying?
I went with Dave on one of these trips, and it was amazing. The glider is such a different experience from a regular airplane. You really feel like you are flying.
Imagine soaring like a bird, gliding on air currents and having the kind of spectacular views of the islands of midcoast Maine, Penobscot Bay and the coast from Bar Harbor to Wiscasset, with Mt. Katahdin , Mt. Washington, and Sugarloaf Mt. in the distance that only birds usually enjoy.

The spiritsouring pilots, Dave Miramant & Steve Larmore with a combined total of over 25,000 flight hours have been at it for over thirty years. There’s one trip where you can even take the controls! Feel like a kid on a roller coaster for the first time, experience breath-taking views of Maine’s unique coastline and a fantastic display of color and geography.

TAKE A HIKE THIS SUMMER

CAMDEN WINDWARD HOUSE BED AND BREAKFAST JOINS WITH COASTAL MOUNTAIN LAND TRUST IN HELPING YOU TAKE A HIKE!

Camden Maine is a fantastic coastal village where you can park your car and go hiking. The Coastal Mountain Land Trust, since 1986, has preserved more than 7,800 acres of hikable land in the Mid Coast of Maine. New this summer, the Land Trust introduces The Take A Hike program. This program offers hiking suggestions from easy with a gradual climb to strenuous. There is a hiking option for all levels of wayfarers.

Views on the hikes offer opportunities to see historic sod roofed houses, organic blueberry fields, majestic lakes and unforgettable seascapes.

The program suggests 3 easy steps to taking a hike:
1. Pick your hike
2. Hop in your car or call a taxi
3. Lace up your walking shoes and enjoy.

The Camden Windward House Bed and Breakfast will provide you with all trail maps and a relaxing place to come back, nap and take a shower. The Camden Windward House offers several Soft Adventure packages and considers this area program a great addition to the Soft adventure options of the Mid Coast. Innkeeper Kristen Bifulco stated, “This organized hiking program is the missing link to the already established mid coast adventure activities.”

New Wine Tasting Law

August 25, 2009 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

Sign of the times, you can’t take your kids into a wine tasting room. Maine will pass a new law that children can not see you tasting wine. Although I somewhat agree with this law, I thought this article about the law was hysterical: http://kennebecjournal.mainetoday.com/news/local/6729883.html , The last line, “We had a wine tasting this weekend and a couple with a baby stroller came in,” she said. “They would have had to leave the baby on the street or I guess the parents could take turns.”

There are some wonderful wineries in the Mid coast of maine. The Cellardoor winery this year has decided to make their Wine stomping festival an adult only event, which makes sense, but boy was it fun to bring the kids the last 2 years. The winery had lots of things for the kids and it was fun for all. This year there will be a grand tent with orchestra music and dancing. Oct 2nd and 3rd, 2009.

Friday night, October 2, with a ticketed wine dinner-dance. Dinner will be served in the vineyard at Cellardoor Winery and each course will be paired with Cellardoor’s wines.  Dinner will be followed by desserts and dancing – dance music provided by Maine Pro Musica.
The Saturday, October 3 Vinfest lineup includes a stellar array of food, wine, music and activities for grown-ups. Cellardoor Winery will host grape stomping, a homemade wine competition, wine tastings, lunch prepared and served by Riverfront Barbeque & Grille of Augusta, wine cellar tours, live music all day, farm stands, hot air balloon rides and many other interesting activities.

Tickets for all Vinfest events will be on sale online. Tickets for the Friday night Vinfest dinner/dance are $100/person and will also gain you admission to the Saturday Vinfest activities. Saturday admission is $10/person.

Camden, Your Personal Maine Lobster Festival

July 20, 2009 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

Camden Maine, how do you love lobster? Let us count the ways…

What are we suggesting? Come and stay in Camden Maine and sample a different lobster dish each day, lobster chowder, lobster mashed potatoes, steamed lobster, or how about tempura lobster with forest mushrooms, bok-choy, micro greens and a lemon nage?
You don’t need to wait for Rockland’s annual Lobster Festival to have a great time eating lobster in a small New England coastal village.
Of the five finalists in the 2008 People’s Choice Lobster Awards, two were from Camden Maine restaurants: Atlantica and Natalies. Joshua Clark, from Atlantica Seafood Bistro, owned by Chef Ken Pacquin and his wife Del, with their fantastic lobster mashed among other great menu items, and Lawrance Klang, the executive Chef at Natalies restaurant in Camden Maine was also one of the top five who competed in the People’s Choice award for his lobster recipe. For such a small town, that’s really amazing. All of these great lobster restaurants are within an easy walk of the Camden Windward House Bed and Breakfast.
The People’s Choice competition held every year at Blaine House, the Maine Governor’s mansion, in Augusta, netted not one but two great Camden Maine chefs!
In addition, Bayview Lobster has a live lobster tank right out on the dock, and steams them perfectly for their guests, not to mention Camden’s Thai curry Lobster, Waterfront Restaurant’s lobster, Ephemere fresh french influenced seafood, and Francine’s local chef for fresh Maine Lobster, and don’t forget that classic New England favorite, -the lobster roll, and who better to serve it than the Camden Deli? The Camden Deli has great food and a great view, and the best Lobster Roll for miles around!
