Camden Windward House B&B has many “excellent” ratings on TripAdvisor. We also have a small number of critical ones as well. Please take TripAdvisor with a grain of salt, as they are part of Expedia and are in the business of charging commissions for bookings as well as selling advertising.
Although we strive to make our guests feel at home, we try not to scrutinize the TripAdvisor website too closely. While we originally did not ask our guests to review us, because we were skeptical of the TripAdvisor method, since so many people use it, we now ask our guests to review us online so that the reviews reflect our guests’ experiences. What is TripAdvisor? TripAdvisor and the sites comprising the TripAdvisor Media Group are operating companies of Expedia, Inc. (NASDAQ: EXPE). Expedia sells rooms and gets a commission for it. We are also reviewed on BedandBreakfast.com

TripAdvisor is a website where people can register and leave a review of a lodging they have stayed at. The shortcomings of TripAdvisor is that they don’t verify the information given by the reviewer or the identity of the reviewer. Also TripAdvisor limits what the innkeeper can respond and gives greater latitude to the reviewer. This leaves a great deal of room for abuse. Also, the driving force behind TripAdvisor is not to “get the truth and go” which used to be their trademarked catch phrase, but it probably incurred liability for the many libelous reviews they publish, so now they say “world’s most trusted travel advice”.

They now sell listings for the lodgings, as well as money they get for reservations made on their site for online commissions. They have a huge stake in the number of reviews entered, because the more words relating to your lodging that are put on TripAdvisor, about Camden Maine, the Camden Windward House, on TripAdvisor, or the names of the rooms of our Inn, will make Google think that TripAdvisor is the best source for information rather than our site.

One way they profit is revenue from online reservations made from their website. So if you rely on TripAdvisor, take their motto with a grain of salt, -, the truth is never as obvious as all that. For instance, they let you search for lodgings by location. However, the listings you get are not by the nearness of the location. Rather, those at the top of the list will be those who have agreed to pay the highest commissions on bookings. So you may think you are going to be right at the center of town, when, in fact, the “Camden Maine” lodging you found is actually in Northport. For information about traveling to Camden, as well as maps and links showing exactly where you want to be in Camden Village, check out our Travel to Camden pages, or just plain, Google Map it! to see if you will be strolling down a treelined street surrounded by the warm glow of evening lights of the historic homes of Camden Village, and the cottage gardens and trellises of the local homes, or driving in the pitch blackness to a place you vaguely remember. I know we’re biased in this regard, but we also have traveled extensively, and have always preferred staying in the Village, as opposed to at a distance.

We offer these observations when using TripAdvisor:

check to see if a lodging frequently has many reviews entered on the same date. That might indicate that a single individual is entering them in batches, rather than unique travelers actually reviewing the establishment.

Do the reviews sound phony?

One of our guests favorite things about Windward House is its proximity to the Village center and the harbor.

Be careful searching for lodgings by town. Our experience is that many lodgings that state they are “Camden” lodgings are really from towns nearby, so if you expect to walk from your lodging, you may be very surprised when you check in.

With miles of hiking trails and wonderful scenic vistas, Camden Hills State Park is a must visit attraction in Camden Maine.Walk through the backyard garden, onto Megunticook Street to begin your hike… Camden Hills State Park has 30 miles of hiking trails with access from five major trail heads; the Mt. Battie trail begins/ends at the end of Megunticook Street, which is the street that backs the Camden Windward House Bed & Breakfast, about a two and half block walk up to the trail. Camden Hills State Park is a low set of mountains in the towns of Camden, Rockport and Lincolnville. There are incredible views of Penobscot Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Parts of the trail are very steep. Skiing and snowmobiling trails also exist in the park.

There are 20 trails in Camden Hills State Park, each with varying difficulty:

Windjammer Weekend and the Camden Harbor Schooners

Every labor day weekend Camden holds its annual Windjammer Weekend.

The Largest Historic Fleet Anywhere, Camden

Camden has the largest fleet of historic wooden schooners in the world. With the schooners Grace Bailey, Mercantile (both declared National Landmarks – maybe they should have been “Sea” marks, but whatever), Mistress, the elegant Surprise, exciting Olad, Appledore, Heron, the Lazyjack II, just to name a few, Camden Harbor, especially in the summer, can look like a scene out of Pirates of the Caribbean.
You may go back in time and enjoy a cruise around Penobscot Bay for two hours or five days, if you prefer. Many of the Windward House guests are enjoying a day or two before or after their cruise, or are booked on a two hour trip aboard Surprise or Olad.
For those taking the longer trips, we always forgo any two day minimum stay requirement if they only want to stay one night before and or after their multi-day cruise aboard a Windjammer.

All of our guests who have done a cruise, even self admitted land lubbers have come back astounded by the experience, and in love with the Maine Coast.
The Schooners named above as well as many more that make their homes in other ports parade into the harbor and permit people to come aboard on Windjammer Weekend.
There are several activities and events that go on during Windjammer Weekend. The wonderful Windjammer Fleet comes in and all can tour the these historic boats. There are fireworks and music that weekend. All of the fun is 1 block from the Camden WIndward House, book now, this weekend fills quickly.
