Winter Hikes in Camden and Rockport

Yes, it’s cold, yes it’s icy, yes the trail markers are covered in snow, yes you still should get out and hike! I compiled a list here of “safe” winter hikes. The hikes have gradual slopes and little chance of getting lost even if you can’t see the markers. Good Luck and always bring a cellphone with you. Remember “humans were not meant to hibernate.” Dress warm, wool socks, baliclava, good gloves, & extra granola bars in your pockets!

Winter Hiking in Camden and Rockport
Mt. Battie Camden Hills – Camden Maine
Suggested hikes:
Bald Mountain – start #11 on map, this is a multi use road that has trail heads. The road is wide and gradual. Take Trail #8 Bald Rock. The hike on Bald rock is a gradual hike. Not too steep. The overlook at the top is the ocean. There is a neat old lean- to at the top, if you can find it.
Maiden’s Cliff Trail #1 on map.
Gradual slope. The entrance for this trail is not marked well. When you see the start of Lake Megunticook on Rt52, there will be parking on the right hand side. You will most likely see other cars parked there. This trail usually has walking sticks at the beginning that other hikers have left for each other. The overlook is of Lake Megunticook, in the winter it is neat to see the snow mobiles and ice houses (you can actually walk on the ice to the little islands in the lake). There is a big wooden cross at the top to commemorate a young girl that fell over the side, the Maiden that fell over the cliff.

MerrySpring Park, Camden: This field is very popular with cross country skiiers, but also with winter hikers. This is a favorite of locals, a hidden gem. Here is a link to the trails: http://www.merryspring.org/Parkmap/parkmap%20home.html

Rockport
Beauchamp Point:
Gradual and easy hike.
From Camden, make a left on Union Street, drive to the end, make left on Russell Avenue, make 1st right on Mechanic Street, drive to end and park. You will see signs for the trail. This trail is an old dirt road. It is wide and has views of Rockport Harbor. I usually walk for a while sit on some rocks overlooking the harbor and then walk back. Very casual and easy walk.

Beech Hill, Rockport
Take rt 1 to Beech Road. Make a left on Beech road, Prism Gallery restaurant is the landmark on RT 1 to turn rt. Drive about a mile, if you got to South Street, you went too far. There is a sign on Beech Street for parking. The hill is a big blueberry field, so there are very little trees. Beech hill has big open fields with views of the ocean. At the top of the hill there is a beautiful old stone tea house. The tea house is only open select times in spring, summer, and fall, but is wonderful to look at and look in the windows.
This hike is very gradual and easy. Article about this hike: http://new.bangordailynews.com/2011/03/02/outdoors/favorite-places-in-maine-beech-hill-rockport/

Nordic Ski Loop Opens in Camden Maine

MORE TO DO IN CAMDEN IN THE WINTER: New Addition to the Camden Snow Bowl — Celebrate the opening of the new Ragged Mountain Nordic Ski Trail at the Camden Snow Bowl. A new 3.2-mile cross-country ski loop trail which explores the northeastern side of Ragged Mountain. This trail is one section of an expanded network of trails that will provide greater hiking, skiing and mountain bike access to Ragged Mountain and which the land trust and Snow Bowl will be opening in the coming year.

The new trail, which is scheduled to be groomed on a voluntary basis by Camden Regional High School cross-country ski coach Richard Stetson, will offer additional recreation option for visitors of the Camden Snow Bowl and provide several miles of nordic skiing trail. Beginning from a new trailhead located on the left side of the Snow Bowl’s tubing hill, the trail climbs through woods on the eastern side of the Camden Snow Bowl before heading south and looping through a 325-acre portion of the land trust’s Ragged Mountain Preserve.

Until a more gentle ascent is contructed later in 2011, it should be noted that the initial three-tenths of a mile of the new trail rises quite steeply before leveling off and heading southwest towards the land trust’s preserve. Given the steepness of this initial ascent, it is recommended that users consider hiking the first section. Similarly, skiers are also advised to remove their skis and walk downhill on the return, depending on snow conditions and ability level. Additionally, given the objective of maintaining a high quality nordic track throughout the winter season, visitors of the trail are asked to not walk or snowshoe on the set track portion of the trail and to leave dogs at home.

A joint project of the Ragged Mountain Recreation Area and Coastal Mountains Land Trust, the trail was constructed during the summer and fall of 2010 in collaboration with a crew from the Maine Conservation Corps and volunteers from the land trust, Camden Hill Regional High School and the Midcoast Chapter of the New England Mountain Bike Association. Construction of the trail was funded through the financial support of the Knox County Fund at the Maine Community Foundation, the Land for Maine’s Future Program and the Maine Recreational Trails Program. The trail is also made possible by the Foote family, who generously granted the land trust permission to bring the trail across their Ragged Mountain property.

More to do in the Winter In Camden Maine

This evening the Camden Maine Select Board was told about the plan for an outdoor ice rink in the historic Camden Maine Amphitheatre.  The Camden Winterfest Committee has been working with the Friends of the Amphitheatre Skating Rink to bring an outdoor rink to Camden Maine this winter. All approvals have been won and tomorrow the rink will be ordered. The Winterfest Committee is excited about this new addition to the annual winter celebration. The skating is free and the views are spectacular.  Rink will be up for approximately 2 – 3 months, of course weather dependant. http://www.winterfest.mycamdenmaine.com/

Ice Skating in Mid Coast Maine

If you have your own skates and are familar with skating on lakes, Camden Maine has a great option for you. Bring a shovel and go out to Lake Megunticook. If you don’t want to shovel your own rink, Hosmer Pond at the Camden Snow Bowl is maintained very well.
