Friday, June 18 at 8 p.m., Maine Pro Musica will perform what some might call the perfectly balanced evening of classical music at the Camden Opera House, Elm Street/Route 1.

The June 18 program has a variety of classical audience favorites conducted by Hymes combined with the talent and inspiration offered by distinguished cellist Marc Johnson. Starting the program will be Rossini’s bubbly “La Cenerentola (Cinderella)” Overture, followed by the sumptuous Fauré Pavane and the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto performed by Johnson of Cushing.

I was fortunate to enjoy this orchestra at the Holiday Pops in Rockport Maine. The performance and conducting is world class. If you enjoy fine music, you will love this.  My young son sang with the orchestra. He has a sweet voice and added  a choir boy sound and beauty to the event at Christmas time.

This event is highly recommended by us at Camden Windward House Bed and Breakfast. The Opera House is a short walk from the Inn.  You will have a wonderful and romantic evening.

Tickets are $25 and $30 for adults; and $8 for children younger than 13. They can be purchased online at camdenoperahouse.com or by calling 470-7066. Innkeeper at Windward House will be more than happy to have your tickets for you upon arrival.

Barrage!

Barrage boasts a musical lineup almost as unconventional as the music they play. The group is comprised of a half dozen fiddle players backed by a rock band and blends jazz, classical and rock. The result is not quite classical and not exactly rock – imagine Led Zeppelin played by a pack of out-for-blood violins. Barrage is more than just a group that performs music while standing on stage. Their shows have been compared to such aggressively theatrical presentations as “Stomp” and “Riverdance,” while being praised for their musical excellence.

“After an evening of performing jigs on rocket fuel, its no wonder that more than a few horsehairs snapped on their bows.”

“We like to call our music tribal-acoustic-folk funk,” said Ross (Stiff Whisker and the Driftwood Kids). “It’s music that’s very easy and fun, but still has a kind of soul to it. You can dance to it, you can sing along to it. We want people to think, ‘That’s a damn good song’ when they hear us.”
