Ride an Elevator...Tour a Camp
So…you’ve made it to Camden and checked in. If you are anything like us, you didn’t plan anything to do and you’ve waited until the last minute to figure out what you are going to do. You can ask your favorite innkeeper (Matt, Dan or Barney) or just go with what I’m about to suggest. We planned this the last minute. Like…literally…the last minute. We decided at 10:04 AM and were in the car by 10:10 AM. Okay…maybe it was 6 minutes. Anyway…jump in the car and head north for about 50 minutes to the Penobscot Bridge Observatory and Fort Knox.
I won’t bore you with every single detail, so I will just give you a quick lowdown. Drive up to the gate attendant where you will pay the fee. Park the car and head into the Observatory. You will get to read some history about the bridge and view some photos before heading into the elevator for a 50 second ride to the top. Once the elevator doors open, walk a few more steps up to the top where you get to see breathtaking views in all directions. I won’t spoil anything else so you will just have to visit for yourself!

We spent a decent amount of time viewing the beautiful panoramic scene before taking the elevator back down. We hopped back in the car where we found Barney (sorry pups….you aren’t allowed) and our niece waiting for us. We took the 1 minute drive over to the parking lot for Fort Knox.
Fort Knox was really neat. Really….really….neat! We went on a beautiful July summer day and there were no crowds. It really was a treat. We went with our nieces who range from 10 to 15 and they loved it. And best of all…Barndog got to go with us.
Fort Knox was named after Henry Knox, America’s first Secretary of War and Commander of Artillery during the American Revolution. In case you were wondering (I know I was), Fort Knox in Kentucky is also named after him.
Craving for some more history about Fort Knox? Stop in at the gift shop and history center before you head out to your next journey! For us, we had to get home before check-in time started, but not until Dan got a picture with the staff in the gift shop!
Without a doubt, you should definitely add this to your itinerary. You will not be disappointed! Now…off to our next last minute, unplanned, impromptu journey!
